In our department, clinical (inpatient), intensive care and emergency services are provided regularly and without interruption, 24 hours a day. Pre- and post-operative care for adult patients is provided in a total of two wards (Units 54 and 64), in single or at most double-bed rooms in each of which equipment such as air conditioning, a refrigerator, cable TV, private lockers and a bathroom-WC is standard. The single rooms have the equipment needed for a person to stay with the patient continuously, depending on the wishes of the patient or relatives. For the health of patients and because of the risk of infection, no companions are allowed in the ward before surgery. Companions are admitted to the patients' side after surgery, once the patient is moved from intensive care to the ward. Inpatient treatment of pediatric patients is carried out in Unit 33 of Hacettepe İhsan Doğramacı Children's Hospital. Adult and pediatric patients who need intensive care treatment before or after surgery are monitored in the Intensive Care Unit.
All patients admitted by the Emergency Services of Hacettepe Adult Hospital and İhsan Doğramacı Children's Hospital and referred for evaluation by the Department of Thoracic Surgery are evaluated as soon as possible by our physicians on duty, without any time restriction (every day, 24 hours), and their treatment is planned and carried out under the supervision and responsibility of faculty members and their assistants. So that there is no delay in the follow-up and treatment of inpatients and of patients presenting to our hospital's emergency services, specialist healthcare staff consisting of physicians and nurses are continuously available in the clinic outside working hours, and the necessary diagnostic and treatment services are thus provided under the supervision and responsibility of faculty members and their assistants. All medically urgent surgical procedures can be performed day and night, 24 hours a day.
All inpatients are evaluated in detail before surgery. In every patient, examinations, laboratory tests and radiological investigations of the heart, circulatory, respiratory, kidney, liver and bleeding-clotting systems in particular are performed routinely. If deemed necessary, specialist departments are consulted regarding these systems and/or any other pre-existing systemic problem, and efforts are made to resolve or minimize possible problems that may be encountered before and after the operation. Before surgery, patients and their relatives are given detailed information about the type of disease, its likely course, treatment options, expectations and all complications that may occur during or after treatment. Verbal and written consent regarding the treatment method is requested from each patient and their family.
Patients recommended for inpatient treatment do not need to bring anything with them on first admission other than pajamas and/or a nightgown and personal hygiene items (toothbrush, toothpaste, razor, bath towel, etc.). Patients should carefully avoid keeping unnecessary items unrelated to their health and treatment, excess money and jewelry with them. Cleaning and maintenance of wards and rooms and changing of bed linen are done regularly several times a day, and a barber service is available to patients on a continuous basis, depending on the patient's wishes or medical necessity. Patients' nutrition is provided under the supervision of specialist dietitians, with the required calories, carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals calculated, in a manner specific to the person and the treatment applied, and meal intervals are arranged as needed. Training and information on pre-operative breathing exercises are provided by our department's respiratory physiotherapist. After surgery, respiratory physiotherapy support begins in intensive care and continues in the ward. For patients who will be operated on under general anesthesia, eating is restricted during the last 8 hours before surgery; for this purpose, patients are generally advised to take no water or other food by mouth from 24:00 the night before.
Patients in the wards may be visited every day between 12:30-13:30 and 18:30-19:30. For the health and comfort of patients, care should be taken that large numbers of visitors do not come at once, that child visitors are not brought, that open food items and flowers in particular are not brought during visits, and that the rules set by the hospital administration are fully observed. Entry into the Intensive Care Unit is prohibited for anyone other than the doctors and healthcare staff on duty, and visits by relatives of patients treated there are not possible except, in cases of necessity, with the special permission of the faculty member conducting the treatment.
