Radiation Safety

Hacettepe University Hospitals is an institution in Ankara that provides health services at the highest level and where medical education and scientific research are carried out. In the university hospitals, services are provided with radioactive materials and radiation-producing devices under licenses of the Turkish Atomic Energy Authority (TAEK).

Pursuant to Article 4-d of Law No. 2690 on the Turkish Atomic Energy Authority (TAEK), it is among the duties of institutions to determine the principles, measures and limits of legal responsibility that ensure protection against the harms of ionizing radiation in work carried out using ionizing radiation devices, radioactive materials and similar radiation sources. For this reason, TAEK carried out a study establishing the procedures and principles of the Radiation Safety Committee and requested that our hospital establish a "Radiation Safety Committee".

In line with this request, Hacettepe University Hospitals established the "Hacettepe University Hospitals Radiation Safety Committee" with the approval of our Rectorate dated 04.05.1999 and numbered B.30.2.HAC.0.70.10.00.01/31-349. The committee, which held its first meeting on 28.05.1999, also published the "Directive on the Establishment and Working Principles of the Hospital Radiation Safety Committee" adopted by the Hacettepe University Senate.

The Hacettepe University Hospitals Radiation Safety Committee consists of two separate boards: the Radiation Safety Supreme Board and the Radiation Safety Implementation and Control Board. The coordination of these boards is provided by the Radiation Safety Unit.

The Radiation Safety Unit: In order to ensure radiation safety for hospital staff, patients and the environment, it provides services for all hospital staff under the responsibility of our Radiation Safety Experts, guided by the radiation safety legislation of TAEK and other international organizations as well as the relevant laws and regulations.
